The materials we use

All maps are available in two different types of materials: Acrylic glass and Aluminium (also known as Alu-Dibond). The sizes we offer for both materials are: 120 cm x 60 cm; 160 cm x 80 cm; and 200 cm x 100 cm. MuseMaps' favorite material is Acrylic glass, because of the extraordinary depth and intensity of the colors.

Acrylic Glass

Acrylic glass is possibly better known by its trademark Plexiglas®. For all acrylic products a transparent, 4mm thick acrylic sheet is used. The material keeps its shape well and is very durable. Acrylic glass give the map a brilliant look and unbelievable depth.

A protective layer of laminate is applied to the topside of the paper carrier (highly transparent glossy adhesive foil). The semi-finished product is then fixed on (glued onto) a sheet using double-sided adhesive foil. The plate can be cleaned easily by gently wiping it with a moist cloth.

It does reflect the surroundings more than Aluminium does, but illumination from light sources gives more depth to the map (see top and adjacent image). We advice this material for bright spaces and where natural light (direct or indirect sunlight) can enter the room.

Aluminium (Alu-Dibond)

The aluminium version is also known as Alu-Dibond. It is an extremely stable sandwich-built sheeting with aluminium sheeting at the top and bottom, and hard composite material in elegant black in between. Due to the matte top layer, it reduces reflections of surrounding objects in the room.

Alu-Dibond is engineered to retain superior flatness and will not bend like solid aluminium. It offers a more rigid and strong look of the map (see adjacent image). Thanks to its rigidity, durability and elegant look, this material is often used by art galleries for exhibitions. The plate can be cleaned easily by gently wiping it with a moist cloth.

We advise this material for relatively dark spaces and where natural light (direct or indirect sunlight) does not enter the room.
